LOUISVILLE, Ky. (September 29, 2006) - Junior Lizzy Peijs (Venlo, Holland) scored a pair of goals to lead the University of Connecticut field hockey team to its fourth straight win with a 3-1 victory at No. 13 Louisville in a critical BIG EAST Conference clash on Friday night.
With the victory, Connecticut extends its winning streak to four consecutive games and improves its record to 9-2 overall and 1-1 in BIG EAST action. Louisville slips to 6-3 overall and 1-1 in the league following the loss. The Huskies improved to 4-0 vs. the Cardinals in the all-time series, including three consecutive wins since Louisville became a member of the BIG EAST Conference in 2005.
Mandy Odenbach (Webster, N.Y.) set up Lauren Aird (Harare, Zimbabwe) for the games first goal at the 21:41 mark of the first half, giving the Huskies a 1-0 lead. The goal marked Airds sixth of the season.
Peijs ripped a shot from the top of the right side of the circle to beat Louisville goalkeeper Marie Claire-Heller, just 57 seconds into the second half, to increase UConns advantage to 2-0.
Peijs added her second goal of the game and her team-leading 10th of the season on a penalty stroke at 49:52 to make the score 3-0 in the favor of Connecticut.
Louisvilles Allison Maffitt scored on a feed from Jessica Javelet at 67:05 to allow the Cardinals to avoid becoming UConns fourth straight shutout victim.
For the game the Huskies out-shot Louisville 16-8 while the Cardinals won the penalty corner battle 6-4.
The Huskies return to action in Louisville when they face California on Sunday, Oct. 1 beginning at 11:30 a.m.
