    No. 10 UConn Field Hockey Wins Fifth Straight With 5-1 Victory Over No. 14 Cal

    LOUISVILLE, Ky. (October 1, 2006) - The No. 10 University of Connecticut field hockey team won its fifth straight game and its second versus a ranked opponent with a 5-1 win vs. No. 14 California on Sunday afternoon at Louisville.

    The win improves the Huskies to 10-2 overall in the season, while California falls to 8-3.

    Sophomore Lauren Aird (Harare, Zimbabwe) didn’t waste any time getting UConn on the board as she notched her seventh goal off the season via an assist from senior Meagan Hoffmann (West Granby, Conn.) just 1:12 into the contest to make the score 1-0.

    Cal tied the game at 1-1 off a penalty corner setup that was put away by Valentina Godfrid at the 24:27 mark of the opening half.

    UConn took the lead for good on a successful penalty corner by junior Lizzy Peijs (Venlo, Holland) at 30:52, her team-best 11th goal of the season.

    The Huskies put the game away in the opening moments of the second half with a pair of goals over the opening 1:09 of the final stanza. Junior Kristin Galuski (Latham, N.Y.) scored an unassisted tally just 11 seconds into the second half to give the Huskies a two-goal advantage at 3-1.

    Hoffmann followed with her third score of the season less than a minute later at 36:09 to up the margin to 4-1.

    Galuski added her second goal of the game at 46:24 to account for the final 5-1 margin.

    UConn goalkeeper Briana Koza (King of Prussia, Pa.) made seven saves while allowing one goal in her second consecutive start in net.

    For the game, UConn out-shot the Golden Bears 21-10 and attempted nine penalty corners to Cal’s eight attempts.

    The Huskies return to action on Saturday, Oct. 7 when they play host to Princeton beginning at 12:00 p.m. (ET) at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex in Storrs.
