Big East Release
STORRS, Conn. – As the No. 1 UConn field hockey team continues to roll and remains the only undefeated team in Division I, freshman Barbara van den Hoogen earned Big East recognition on Monday afternoon.
Hoogen was named Big East Rookie of the Week, following her two strong performances against Villanova and Dartmouth. The Huskies (13-0, 4-0 Big East) won both games by a combined margin of 15-2.
The freshman midfielder from the Netherlands scored a goal in the 48th minute against Villanova, as part of a 6-0 win. Senior Darby Smith recorded the assist after finding Hoogen in front of the cage.
In Sunday’s matinee with the Big Green, she assisted junior Casey Umstead’s goal in the 40th minute as the Huskies ran away with a 9-2 victory. Hoogen recorded three points over the weekend.
The Husky freshman has started 12 of 13 games this season and has scored four goals, the most of any first-year player to this point. It is the first Rookie of the Week award for a UConn player this fall.
In addition to Hoogen, Umstead and sophomore Amanda Collins were selected to the Big East Honor Roll. Umstead had three goals and three assists this past weekend, while Collins had four goals, including a hat trick on Sunday.
