NEW YORK – After helping the University of Connecticut field hockey team to a pair of wins over ranked opponents this weekend, redshirt-sophomore goalkeeper Nina Klein (Topton, Pa.) was named Big East Defensive Player of the Week while freshman Amelia Iacobucci (Malvern, Pa.) earned Rookie of the Week honors, as announced by the conference on Monday afternoon.
Klein tallied her eighth shutout of the season, starting with No. 2 UConn’s 1-0 victory over No. 11 Old Dominion on Saturday. The Husky keeper stopped three of the Lady Monarchs shots and helped defend against a pair of ODU penalty corners. She followed up with three more saves on Sunday when the Huskies defeated No. 17 Boston University, 5-0.
Overall, Klein tops the national Division I statistical leaders and Big East in goal against average (0.27) and save percentage (.889) after spending 1,022 minutes in the cage this season.
Iacobucci received her first conference honor after tallying the game-winner for the Huskies after 21:33 of play against ODU and posted a goal against BU. The rookie has eight goals this season.
Sophomore Casey Umstead (Sellersville, Pa.) earned a hat trick against the Terriers on Sunday while senior Roisin Upton (Limerick, Ireland) notched a goal and two assists for spots on the Big East Weekly Honor Roll.
UConn will visit Providence on Friday, Oct. 23 at 5 p.m. for a conference match-up.
