STORRS, Conn. – The University of Connecticut field hockey team’s senior captains Roisin Upton (Limerick, Ireland) and Sophie Bowden (Somerset, England) have been selected as two of 38 seniors across the nation to play in the 2015 NFHCA Division I Senior Game, as announced by the NFHCA on Wednesday afternoon.
The game will be held on Saturday, Nov. 21 at the University of Michigan. Action is set to begin at 2:30 p.m.
Upton, the 2014 Big East Defensive Player of the Year and All-America First Team selection, has registered 12 goals and 10 assists for 34 points through 13 games. The tri-captain stands fifth in the nation in points per game (2.62) while ranking ninth in assists/game (0.77) and goals/game (0.92). Upton is two points away from becoming the second player this season and 19th Husky all-time to reach the 100-career point plateau.
A member of the 2014 All-Big East First Team, Bowden is fourth on the team and in the conference with eight assists. Her 0.73 assists/game mark clocks in at No. 3 in the league. Bowden’s senior campaign was highlighted by a season-best four points on two goals to lift the Huskies to a 3-2 win over Stanford on Sept. 25.
Both Upton and Bowden have been essential in anchoring a Husky defense that has tallied 12 shutouts and only allowed six goals this season.
The seniors helped the Huskies claim the Big East regular season title for the third consecutive time with a dominating 8-0 win over Providence on Oct. 23. UConn has earned the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Big East Championship in Norfolk, Va. and will battle Georgetown in its regular season finale on Saturday, Oct. 31.
