STORRS, Conn. Former University of Connecticut field hockey standout Melissa Gonzalez has been a member of the USA Women's National Team since 2009 and was selected to be one of 16 members to compete in this year's Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico held from October 19-29.
The gold medalists at the XVI Pan Am Games are awarded an automatic bid to the 2012 London Olympics where only 12 of the world's 144 teams will compete. The USA, ranked thirteenth in the world, had a large feat ahead of them as they were to face challenging opponents, including top ranked Argentina.
After falling to Argentina five out of the last six Pan Am Games to finish second, Team USA finally came out on top with a stunning 4-2 victory over its No. 1 opponent, capturing the gold medal and a seat in the 2012 Olympics. The Argentina loss marks their first in the Pan Am Games since field hockey's start in 1987.
With the help of Gonzalez, a UConn 2011 graduate, All-American and two-time BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year, the national team defeated Mexico, Chile, Cuba and Canada en route to upending the best team in the world and being handed the gold medal.
