STORRS, Conn. – After completing a perfect 17-0 regular season, two members of the No. 1 UConn field hockey were pegged BIG EAST Weekly Award winners, as announced by the league Monday. Senior Casey Umstead earned Defensive Player of the Week honors, while classmate Charlotte Veitner was selected to the honor roll.
As the only remaining undefeated in the country, the nation’s top-ranked Huskies were led on the defensive side of the field by their senior back, Umstead. Picking up her seventh BIG EAST Player of the Week honor (six defensive, one offensive) of the season, Umstead once again led a strong Huskies defense that picked up its 11th shutout of the season on Saturday and eighth win against a top-20 opponent, defeating No. 11 Boston College 3-0. All season long, Umstead and her teammates have prevented opponents from getting good looks on net, outshooting their opponents 362-100, while holding a 31-11 advantage this week. The defender also made a difference on the attack, notching a goal in each outing for four points, giving her a season total of 42 points, 13 goals and 16 assists.
At the 8:31 mark, Veitner got No. 1 UConn on the board first, as the Huskies outlasted Quinnipiac 3-1. With the victory, Connecticut extended its BIG EAST winning streak to 25 matches, dating back to the 2013 national championship season. Two days later, on senior day, the forward scored to give the Huskies a 2-0 lead against No. 11 Boston College, as the 2017 senior class completed its second undefeated regular season, following an 18-0 clip in 2015.
UConn will look to carry its 17-game win streak into the BIG EAST Tournament where the Huskies will seek their sixth-straight tournament title. Top seeded UConn will battle No. 4 Providence in the semifinal game Friday, Nov. 3 at 1:00 p.m. The league tournament will be held at Providence College, with the championship game being played Sunday, Nov. 5.
