Chloe Hunnable was honored as the BIG EAST Rookie of the Year.

Nov. 3, 2011

SYRACUSE - Eight different Huskies earned postseason accolades and head coach Nancy Stevens was honored as the BIG EAST Coach of the Year as announced by the league at the annual BIG EAST Field Hockey Postseason Banquet.  Senior back Jestine Angelini was honored as the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year while freshman standout Chloe Hunnable was selected as the BIG EAST Rookie of the Year.

A Husky earned Defensive Player of the Year honors for the sixth-straight year.  Jennifer Kleinhans took home the honor from 2006-2008 and Melissa Gonzalez earned the award in each of the last two seasons.  Angelini anchors a defense that leads the conference in shutouts (seven), goals against average (0.87) and goals allowed per game (0.88). The Huskies have held their opponents to 134 shots, while allowing only 15 goals.

In BIG EAST play, Connecticut’s defense allowed four goals and earned four shutouts. In addition to being a constant defensive threat, Angelini led the league with 13 assists.

Hunnable is the fourth Husky to be named BIG EAST Rookie of the Year.  Rookie of the Year has not been awarded by the league since the 2000 season.  Hunnable leads all newcomers with 30 points on 13 goals and four assists. She is averaging 2.00 points per game, ranking third in the BIG EAST. In conference play, Hunnable led all scorers with 4.00 points per game. Her 16 points tied for second while she topped the conference with eight goals.

Stevens was named BIG EAST Coach of the Year for the seventh time in her Hall of Fame career.

Jestine Angelini, Marie Elena Bolles, Rayell Heistand, Hunnable, Anne Jeute and Sarah Mansfield were each named to the All-BIG EAST First Team.  Angelini, Heistand and Jeute were unanimous selections.

Alicia Angelini and Ali Blankmeyer were named to the Second Team.
