STORRS, Conn. – After securing its 14th Big East regular season crown with a thrilling 4-3 comeback win over Temple, the University of Connecticut field hockey team checked in at No. 3 in the penultimate NFHCA/Penn Monto weekly poll, as announced by the organization on Tuesday morning.
UConn (14-2) jumped over Penn State, securing 671 total points. UNC (767) and Maryland (748) were the only two teams ranked above the Huskies.
Fresh off its second-straight regular season crown, the Huskies will head to Providence, R.I. to compete in the 2014 Big East Championship. The top-seeded Huskies will take on the fourth-seeded Friars in a semifinal game set for 3:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 7.
UConn is 34-11 (.756) all-time in the league tournament and boasts 13 titles. The Huskies haven’t dropped a Big East semifinal game since the 1995 season.
Freshman forward Charlotte Veitner (Dusseldorf, Germany), who leads the Huskies with an impressive 33 points this season, was named to the conference’s weekly honor roll after scoring twice in the final 4:18 seconds to lift UConn over the Owls on the road. The forward’s 2.00 points/gm mark is second in the Big East and 14th nationally.
