STORRS, Conn. – The University of Connecticut women’s ice hockey team dropped a Hockey East conference to the University of New Hampshire, 3-1, at the Freitas Ice Forum on Saturday afternoon.

The Wildcats (9-11-2, 5-4-1) outshot the Huskies (3-18-2, 1-9-0), 14-0, in the first period and broke through with the game’s first score at the 15:16 mark.  Senior Kristina Lavoie notched her fifth of the season off assists from classmate Katie Brock and freshman Sara Carlson.

Early in the second, UNH added to its lead when senior Kristine Horn netted the eventual game-winner just 2:45 into the frame.

New Hampshire went up 3-0 late in the third period when junior Arielle O’Neill, assisted by Horn, finished on a power play opportunity, but UConn quickly responded with a goal less than a minute later.

Sophomore Rachel Farrel (Cheshire, Conn.) sent the puck up the left boards to classmate Emily Snodgrass (Eagan, Minn.), whose initial shot was saved, but fellow sophomore Sarah MacDonnell (Quispamsis, Que.) was there for the rebound and slipped the puck into the net for her fourth score of the year.

Freshman netminder Elaine Chuli (Waterford, Conn.) stopped 28 shots as the Huskies were outshot 31-14.  For the Wildcats, sophomore Jenn Gilligan made 13 saves.

The two teams take the ice again for a re-match Sunday at 1:00 pm.
