BOSTON – The UConn women’s ice hockey team (9-10-5, 5-7-3 WHEA) was shut out 4-0 by Northeastern (21-4-1, 16-2-0 WHEA) Friday in the first match-up of the home-and-home series.
Senior goaltender Elaine Chuli (Waterford, Ont.) posted an impressive 53 saves to bring her season total to 540.
Northeastern got off to an early lead after Paige Savage scored 49 seconds into the game. The Hockey East foe extended its lead halfway through the period with a power play goal from Shelby Herrington and UConn trailed Northeastern 2-0 going into the first break.
UConn went five for six on the penalty kill, only allowing one power play goal all game despite being down a player on six occasions. Northeastern was only called for one penalty all game in the second period and UConn was unable to nab a goal.
The Northeastern Huskies tacked on another insurance goal early in the second period and UConn could not capitalize to close the gap. The score remained 3-0 headed into the third.
NU got its fourth and final goal 13:45 into the third period to clinch it 4-0. UConn was outshot by Northeastern 57-15, but came out on top with face-offs 23-22.
UConn and Northeastern come together for game-two tomorrow, Jan. 23 at 3 p.m. at the Freitas Ice Forum in Storrs for UConn’s Skating Strides for Breast Cancer game.
