BURLINGTON, Vt. – Two goals from sophomore Leah Lum (Richmond, B.C.) helped the Huskies sweep the Catamounts 3-1 in game-two Saturday. UConn improves to 11-12-5 overall and 7-8-3 in Hockey East games while Vermont moves to 6-21-2 overall and 4-13-2 in conference play.
Lum opened the scoring for the second straight time when she tipped one in off a shot from senior Caitlin Hewes (Stillwater, Minn.) 3:14 into the first period to give the Huskies the early 1-0 lead.
The Huskies outshot the Catamounts 8-7 in the first period and killed off two Vermont power plays to maintain their 1-0 lead going into the first break.
Vermont tied it up with a power play goal from Daria O’Neill 6:09 into the second, but UConn regained the lead five minutes later on the power play. Sophomore Theresa Knutson (Onalaska, Wis.) scored her fifth power play goal of the season with assists from Lum and freshman Kayla Mee (Winnipeg, Manitoba).
Lum knocked in her second goal of the game, third of the weekend, when she went one-on-one with Vermont’s goaltender to extend UConn’s lead to 3-1 four minutes into the third period. Lum finished with four points total on the weekend.
Vermont outshot UConn 25-16 overall. Senior goaltender Elaine Chuli (Waterford, Ont.) made 24 stops for a combined total of 56 saves over the course of the two-game series with Vermont. The Catamounts were one for seven on the power play while the Huskies finished at .500, going one for two on power play opportunities.
The Huskies will remain at home for their next four games, starting with single-game match-ups against No. 1/2 Boston College on Saturday, Feb. 6 and Providence on Sunday, Feb. 7. Both games are scheduled for a 2 p.m. start at the Freitas Ice Forum in Storrs.
