ORONO, Maine – The UConn women’s ice hockey team split the weekend series with Maine after the Black Bears stumped the Huskies 1-0 on Saturday in game two at Alfond Arena.
Junior net-minder Annie Belanger (Sherbrooke, Quebec) made 35 saves, including a 16-save shutout in the third period to keep the final within one. She totaled a combined 61 saves against the Black Bears this weekend.
UConn falls to an even 14-14-4 overall record and is 9-11-2 in Hockey East games. The Huskies picked up two points this series after defeating Maine 2-1 in game one Friday. The Black Bears are now 10-20-1 overall with a 6-16-1 conference record.
Maine scored the only goal of the game with 23 seconds up on the clock in the first period when Brooke Stacey, who is tied for first on the team in points, gave the Black Bears a 1-0 lead going into the first break.
The Huskies and the Black Bears played 40 scoreless minutes to end the game 1-0 in favor of Maine. The Black Bears outshot UConn 36-27 overall.
UConn was 0-4 on the power play and Maine went 0-6.
The Huskies return home to close out the 2016-17 regular season with a two-game home stand against New Hampshire, beginning on Friday, Feb. 17 at the Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum.
