STORRS, Conn. – The UConn women’s ice hockey team got a third period goal from Michela Cava (Thunder Bay, Ontario) but was unable to overcome an early 4-0 hole, falling to Maine, 4-1, at Freitas Ice Forum on Friday afternoon. With the loss, the Huskies fall to 9-22-2 (6-13-1 WHEA), while the Black Bears jump up to 6-19-5 (4-13-3 WHEA) in 2013-14.
Elaine Chuli (Waterford, Ontario) made 30 saves for UConn in the loss, the 15th straight contest she has turned aside at least 30 shots. Meaghan Tracey got the start in net for Maine and picked up 31 saves. The Black Bears out-shot the Huskies 34-32 in the contest, while converting on 2-of-4 power plays. UConn was 0-for-4 with the man advantage, and won 35-of-60 faceoffs.
Maine took advantage of a cross-checking penalty on UConn and jumped out to an early 1-0 lead at the 7:25 mark after Kristin Gilmour corralled a rebound in front of the net and poked a shot past the pad of Chuli to notch her second career goal. Assists were credited on the play to Audra Richards and Jennifer More.
Less than seven minutes later, Maine doubled its lead when Brittany Huneke fired a shot from the right point that deflected off Chuli’s right pad towards Missy Denks, who collected the rebound and slipped a shot past the UConn goalie to give the Black Bears a 2-0 advantage.
The Black Bears tacked onto their lead at 15:55 when Brooklyn Langlois connected on her first goal of the season. The play developed when Langlois received the puck on the point and ripped a shot through traffic that found its way past Chuli and into the back of the net.
UConn’s first chance of the contest came at the 4:46 mark when a Husky threaded an outlet pass up to Cava who beat a defender in front of the net but had her shot rejected by Maine goalie Meghann Treacy.
The Huskies nearly broke through early in the second period, after Cava tossed a pass from behind the net up to Leah Buress (Windsor, Ontario) who tried to flip a shot into the top right corner of the net but Treacy was able to reach up and swat it with her glove, preserving the 3-0 Maine lead.
Maine struck again midway through the second, taking a 4-0 lead when Brianne Kilgour netted her seventh score of the season after redirecting Gilmour’s pass in front of the net. The score marked Maine’s second power play goal of the afternoon after a Husky was whistled for cross checking at 11:41.
The Huskies got on the board 4:03 into the third period after Cava netted her third goal in two games against Maine, finishing in front of the net after receiving a pass from Sarah MacDonnell (Quispamsis, New Brunswick). The sophomore now boasts nine goals in 2013-14, which ranks third on the Husky squad. Both Cava and MacDonnell have now each accumulated 25 points on the year.
UConn returns to the ice on Saturday afternoon, hosting the Black Bears in its regular season finale set for 2 p.m. Erin Burns (Listowel, Ontario), Sarah Moses (New Hamburg, Ontario), Kiana Nauheim (Fairbanks, Alaska) and Stephanie Raithby (London, Ontario) will be honored for Senior Day prior to the puck drop.
