DURHAM, N.H. – Two goals from sophomore Theresa Knutson (Onalaska, Wis.) lifted the UConn women’s ice hockey team past UNH 2-1 in overtime Sunday.
With all 2015-16 regular season results decided, the No. 4 UConn (15-14-5, 11-10-3 WHEA) and No. 5 New Hampshire (11-22-1, 8-16-0 WHEA) will meet again immediately when UConn hosts UNH in the Hockey East quarterfinal round, beginning Feb. 26.
The Wildcats took a 1-0 lead after the first period when Nicoline Jenson put UNH on the board 8:50 into the game. The Huskies were unable to answer in the first or second period, but they held the Wildcats to a one-goal lead.
Knutson knotted the score up 1-1 when she scored top shelf to get the equalizer 36 seconds into the third period. Fellow sophomore Justine Fredette (Winnipeg, Manitoba) claimed the helper on the play, her 17th assist of the season.
Despite a power play opportunity for both teams, regulation time ended in a 1-1 draw and the game went into overtime.
Knutson ended the game 1:25 into the overtime period after she sniped the puck top corner when UNH’s goalie, Kyra Smith, was being screened. Senior Caitlin Hewes (Stillwater, Minn.) took credit for the game-winning assist.
Senior goaltender Elaine Chuli (Waterford, Ont.) again finished with 29 saves on Sunday, bringing her combined total to 54 saves in the two-game series against the Wildcats.
The Huskies will face the Wildcats again for a best-of-three series in the Hockey East quarterfinal round. UConn will host New Hampshire for all three games, beginning Friday, Feb. 26 at 7 p.m. at the Freitas Ice Forum in Storrs.
