BOSTON, Mass. – The University of Connecticut women’s ice hockey team matched its best offensive output of the season in a 7-5 loss to No. 4 Boston University on Saturday afternoon. The Huskies led 4-1 at the end of the first period and upped the advantage to 5-1 early in the second before the Terriers scored six unanswered to steal the victory.
UConn (3-27-3, 1-18-1 Hockey East) sophomore Rachel Farrel (Cheshire, Conn.) scored the first goal of the game at the 3:05 mark, assisted by classmate Sarah MacDonnell (Quispamsis, Que.). BU (22-5-3, 17-2-1) tied the game at the 13:59 mark when Jenelle Kohanchuk found the back of the net.
The Huskies rattled off three straight goals to take a three-goal lead into the first intermission. Freshman Michela Cava (Thunder Bay, Ont.) scored her team-leading 10th of the year, followed by goals from junior Stephanie Raithby (Windsor, Ont.) and sophomore Kayla Campero (Wallingford, Conn.).
Less than three minutes into the second, freshman Brittany Berisoff (Kelowna, B.C.) upped the Connecticut lead to four goals.
The Terrier comeback started with a power play goal by Sarah Lefort at 4:35 and she cut the lead to two with an even strength goal at 15:10. Just 38 seconds later, Isabel Menard had the lead down to one and Shannon Doyle tied the game with just 12 seconds to go in the period.
Kayla Tutino netted the eventual game-winner 4:38 into the third, followed by Kohanchuk’s second of the day.
Boston University outshot Connecticut, 50-16 for the game. Freshman goaltender Elaine Chuli (Waterford, Ont.) stopped 43 shots, while Kerrin Sperry, who only played the second and third, stopped nine for BU.
The two teams go at it again tomorrow at 2:00 pm at the Freitas Ice Forum for Senior Day.
