Sept. 23, 2011
STORRS, Conn. – Sophomore Maggie Walsh (Bloomfield, Conn.) picked up the puck in a scrum in front of the net and poked it across the goal line with just 18 second left to play in regulation, leading to a 2-2 tie for the University of Connecticut women’s ice hockey team against McGill in an exhibition contest at the Frietas Ice Forum, Friday night. Seniors Sami Evelyn (Nepean, Ont.) and Rebecca Hewett (Oak Bluff, Man.) each picked up an assist on the game-tying goal.
The Martlets struck for the only goal of the first period at the 4:40 mark as senior defender Stacie Tardif found junior Chelsey Saunders in the slot for the score. The Huskies managed to go into the locker room down just one, despite being outshot 15-4 and killing off four penalties.
UConn knotted the game at one when sophomore Alexandra Vakos (Hamden, Conn.) sent a pass from the far blue line to freshman Emily Snodgrass (Eagan, Minn.), who found sophomore Jocelyn Slattery (Hugo, Minn.) for the Huskies’ first score of the contest 14:11 into the second. McGill tied the game at the 18:23 mark with a power play goal by sophomore Kim Ton-That, assisted by classmate Gillian Ferrari and junior Chelsey Saunders.
Aside from the one extra-man goal by the Martlets, the Connecticut penalty kill was on point as it killed off six power-play chances for McGill.
The Martlets held a distinct advantage in shots, 43-19, for the game, but UConn had more opportunities in overtime, outshooting McGill 3-2.
Senior Alexandra Garcia (Pointe-Claire, Que.) started in goal for the Huskies and provided 21 saves, while giving up one goal in 30:14 of play. Off the bench, sophomore Nicole Paniccia (Oakville, Ont.) turned away 20 shots and allowed just one goal in 34:37 between the pipes. For the Martlets, junior Taylor Salisbury started and made eight saves, while classmate Andrea Weckman gave up two goals and made nine saves.
Regular season play kicks off when the Huskies host RPI at the Frietas Ice Forum at 7:00 pm on September 30 for the first of a two-game weekend series.
