HAMDEN, Conn. – The UConn women’s hockey team dropped a 3-0 decision at No. 10 Quinnipiac on Friday night at High Point Solutions Arena. The loss moves UConn to 0-2-1 on the season, while QU wins its season opener and goes to 1-0-0.

The Huskies were out-shot 36-9 by the Bobcats, failing to generate any consistent offensive pressure against their top-10 opponent. Elaine Chuli (Waterford, Ontario) stood tall in goal for UConn to keep the contest close, making 33 saves. Her counterpart, QU’s Chelsea Layden, stopped all nine shots she faced to record the shutout.

After a quiet first half of the opening period, Quinnipiac struck at 9:27 for the game’s first goal. With a delayed call on UConn coming, QU pulled Layden for an extra attacker and used the advantage to set up Taylar Cianfarano for a goal.

Early in the second period, the Bobcats struck again at the 2:54 mark of the frame. Lindsay West threw a shot on net, and Nicole Brown was there to tip the puck and deflect it past Chuli to make it 2-0. QU got another in the final three minutes of the second period, with a trickling puck in front finding its way across the goal line to give the Bobcats a three-goal lead.

The Huskies nearly broke through five minutes into the third period, but Emily Snodgrass (Eagan, Minn.) saw her breakaway bid saved by Layden. That ended up being the best chance of the period for Connecticut, as it was unable to generate a better quality look and couldn’t punch across a goal in the final stanza.

UConn has the rest of the weekend off before heading to upstate New York next week for the first of six consecutive contests in the Empire State. First up is a two-game set with Union on Oct. 10 and 11 in Schenectady.
