TROY, N.Y. – Junior goaltender Annie Belanger (Sherbrooke, Quebec) boasted 38 total saves in UConn's 3-0 loss to RPI in game one of the series Friday at Houston Field House.
Rensselaer came out and dominated the offense in the first period, outshooting UConn 22-4 and taking an early 1-0 lead six minutes in. Belanger racked up an impressive 21 saves in the first period alone and helped UConn kill off two penalties in the opening frame.
UConn battled back at the start of the second, registering eight unanswered shots in the first five minutes of the middle frame.
The Huskies received their first power play opportunity of the game over halfway through the second period. Junior Theresa Knutson (Onalaska, Wis.) tallied three consecutive shots on the man-advantage, but UConn could not get on the board.
After UConn killed off another RPI power play, the Engineers tacked on another goal with two minutes left in the second to make it 2-0 heading into the last intermission.
Starting off the third period on the power play, UConn started off the final frame in a similar fashion to the second period with four unanswered shots. Despite the valiant effort by the Huskies, RPI added a third and final goal to its tally to seal the score 3-0 in the end.
UConn, who was outshot by Rensselaer 41-21, went 0-3 on the power play, but also successfully killed off all four RPI power play opportunities.
The Huskies begin a three-game home stand at the Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum with a two-game series with Penn State on Friday, Oct. 21 and Saturday, Oct. 22.
