University Park, Pa. – The UConn women’s ice hockey team earned its second win of the season on the road against Penn State on Saturday, in the first of two games. Sophomore Leah Lum (Richmond, B.C.) scored her first goal of the season in the second period to lift the Huskies past the Nittany Lions, 1-0.
The Huskies move to 2-1-2 overall, while the Nittany Lions drop to 3-4-0. Senior goaltender Elaine Chuli (Waterford, Ont.) recorded 24 saves for her first win and first shutout of the season.
The first period remained scoreless. Penn State outshot UConn in the first frame 10-3, but neither Chuli nor Penn State net minder, Celine Whitlinger, allowed a goal.
The game remained a scoreless draw for the majority of the second period. UConn went up on the powerplay 17 minutes into the middle frame, after Penn State’s Bella Sutton was called for a hooking. Lum capitalized 18 seconds into the man-advantage.
Off the faceoff, senior Leah Buress (Windsor, Ont.) passed it off to senior Brittany Berisoff (Kelowna, B.C.) who found Lum open up by the blue line. Lum then netted her first goal of the season, the eventual game-winner, with 2:15 left on the clock in the second period.
Despite Penn State’s third period efforts and 1:32 of 6-on-5 play, UConn held Penn State through the final period and maintained their 1-0 lead for the win.
Penn State outshot UConn 28-14 during the game, registering more shots than the Huskies in all three frames, but it was Lum’s powerplay goal the left the Huskies on top.
The Huskies and the Nittany Lions are back it again tomorrow, Oct. 25 at 2 p.m. at Pegula Arena.
