Huskies Can't Overcome Five-Goal First

BOSTON, Mass. – The University of Connecticut women’s ice hockey team lost to Northeastern, 9-1, Saturday afternoon.  The UConn Huskies fell to 2-8-1 overall and 1-3-0 in Hockey East, while the No. 7 NU Huskies improved to 7-1-1 and 3-1-0 with the weekend sweep.

Northeastern scored 4:17 into the contest on a goal by Rachel Llanes, but Connecticut answered at the 10:14 mark to tie the game at 1-1 on freshman Margaret Zimmer’s (St. Charles, Ill.) first career goal.  Senior Kelly Horan (Methuen, Mass.) picked up her team-leading seventh assist and freshman Michela Cava (Thunder Bay, Ont.) notched her fourth.

NU went on a tear to finish the period with four straight goals in a matter of four minutes and four second and went on to score eight unanswered in the game.

Casey Pickett netted four goals and two assists for the home team, while Kendall Coyne scored once and dished out five assists.

Northeastern outshot Connecticut, 52-20.

Freshman Elaine Chuli (Waterford, Ont.) started and gave up five goals and made 22 saves in just the first period.  Junior Sarah Moses (New Hamburg, Ont.) came on in relief and stopped 21 shots, while giving up four goals.  For NU, Chloe Desjardins earned the start with just 18 saves.

UConn returns to action when it hits the road to face Hockey East rival Providence next Saturday, November 10 at 3:00 pm.
