STORRS, Conn. – The UConn women’s ice hockey team (4-4-2, 1-4-0) dropped a 2-1 decision to New Hampshire (2-9-0, 2-5-0) on Sunday. Sophomore Marisa Maccario (Marblehead, Mass.) scored her second goal of the season, and third of her career to put UConn on the board in the second period.
UNH took a 1-0 lead nine minutes into the first period after Cassandra Vilgrain put one in past UConn goaltender Annie Belanger (Sherbrooke, Quebec).
UConn tied it up early in the middle frame when Maccario knocked one in back door tight on the right post just over seven minutes into the second. Freshman Jordy Zacharias (Winnipeg, Manitoba) earned credit for the helper as she fed it in to Maccario for the equalizer.
The Huskies could have taken a 2-1 lead later that period after they netted a goal off a UNH rebound, but the ref blew the puck dead early and ruled it no goal.
The Wildcats claimed a 2-1 lead with just over five minutes left in the second after they went up on power play. Jonna Curtis passed the puck, cross-crease to Amy Schlager, who was waiting off the back post to slap it in for the lead.
A scoreless third period left UNH on top 2-1, despite UConn’s last minute 6-on-4 effort. UNH was called for a hooking penalty with 45 seconds on the clock, and UConn called a timeout and pulled Belanger for a two-man advantage, but time expired before the Huskies could capitalize.
UConn led the game in shots by just one, registering 22 compared to UNH’s 21. Belanger made 19 stops for the Huskies, while Wildcat goaltender Kyra Smith tallied 21 saves for her first career win and shutout with UNH.
The Huskies hit the road for a two-game series at No. 4 Clarkson on Friday, Nov. 13 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 14 at 3 p.m. at Cheel Arena in Potsdam, N.Y.
