CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. (Nov. 13, 2008) – Despite out shooting the opposition 37-26, the University of Connecticut women’s ice hockey team (6-4-2, 3-2-0) lost a 3-2 decision at Kelley Rink to No. 5/6 Boston College. Michelle Binning (Oshawa, Ont./Toronto Jr. Aeros. Inter.) and Dominique Thibault (L’Orignal, Ont./Montreal Axion NWHL) both scored on the power play for the Huskies.
Alexandra Garcia (Pointe-Claire, Que./Dawson College) stepped between the pipes to begin the second period after Boston College jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first. Danielle Welch scored on the power play with an assist from Allie Thunstrom at 10:13. Megan Shea added to the Eagle edge (2-0) with less than five minutes remaining in the first period of play.
Kelli Stack, who came in as the co-scoring leader in the Hockey East, got her ninth of the season at 8:02 giving the Eagles a 3-0 lead in the second period.
Still in the second period, Jennifer Chaisson (Cumberland, Ont./St. Peter Catholic) with the centering pass fed the puck to Binning who put it past Molly Schaus. Sami Evelyn (Nepean, Ont./Ottawa NCCP Inter. AA) also had an assist. It was Binning’s ninth of the year and a team-best sixth on the power play at 13:12.
Binning won the face off to the right of Schaus in the third period to gain control of the puck on the power play. She fed the pass to Thibault who hit the back of the net at 12:49 to bring the Huskies within one goal (3-2). It was Thibault’s 12th goal of the season.
The Huskies forced Schaus to make several saves in the waning minutes of the period as head coach Heather Linstad pulled Garcia for the extra attacker with less than a minute remaining. Garcia finished the night with 15 saves in her fourth appearance in the crease for UConn
UConn continues on the road with a 2 p.m. game at Providence on Sunday. The Huskies will take on the Eagles again next week with a 7 p.m. game on Thursday, Nov. 20 at Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum.
· The Huskies have scored at least one goal on the power play in the last four games this season. UConn was 2-for-8 on the power play tonight.
· Dominique Thibault is the co-leader in the Hockey East with BC’s Kelli Stack entering the game. Both have contributed 19 points this season with Thibault leading the conference in goals with 12.
· With one goal tonight, Michelle Binning has scored at least one goal in the last four games.
· Binning’s goal doubled her career total of power-play goals entering the 2008-09 season and matched her career goal scoring total (nine).
