BURLINGTON, Vt. (January 1, 2006) - Sophomore Liz Gallinaro (Amherst, Mass.) scored the game-winning goal at the 4:11 mark in the second period off of an assist from junior Leslie Hurlburt (Markham, Ontario) as the University of Connecticut women's ice hockey team defeated Vermont, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon.
With the win, which snapped a three-game losing streak, the Huskies improve to 6-12-0 overall and 5-4-0 against Hockey East competition. Vermont is now 2-14-2 overall and 1-6-1 within the league.
The Huskies struck first in the game, with sophomore Jaclyn Hawkins (Manotick, Ontario) tallying her team-leading eighth goal of the season just 2:15 into play. Hawkins was assisted by junior Katherine Van Deveire (Brandon, Manitoba) on the shorthanded goal.
UConn held the two goal advantage after Gallinaro's goal, but the lead was cut down to one after Abbey Kaknes was able to get the puck around senior Kaitlyn Shain (Calgary, Alberta) at the 12:35 point in the second stanza for Vermont's only goal of the game. The goal was scored on the power play after freshman Brianna Uliasz (Chalfont, Pa.) was sent to the penalty box for hooking at the 10:43 mark.
Both teams were scoreless in the third period. For the game, the Catamounts out-shot the Huskies, 25-19. UConn was 0-for-2 on the power play while Vermont was 1-for-4 with the man advantage. Shain had 24 saves in the game while Jenilee Roy stopped 17 shots for the Catamounts.
The Huskies will return to action on Monday, Jan. 2, when they wrap up the season series at Vermont. The puck is set to drop at 2:00 p.m.
