STORRS, Conn. – The UConn women’s ice hockey team returns to the Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum on Monday, Jan. 2 where they will kick off 2017 against Northeastern. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m.
The Huskies went 9-6-3 in the first half of the season and will start 2017 with a 4-3-1 Hockey East record.
In its last outing of 2016, UConn played a home-and-home series with Boston University. After suffering a 4-1 loss to the Terriers in game one at home, UConn defeated BU for the first time since the 2009-10 season in game two at Walter Brown Arena.
Senior Kelly Harris (Canton, Mich.) gave UConn a 1-0 lead in the first period, but BU tied it up 1-1 in the second with a power play goal. Junior Marisa Maccario (Marblehead, Mass.) scored the game-winning, short-handed goal to put the Huskies on top 2-1 in the end.
Northeastern is 11-6-3 heading into Monday’s contest with a 7-4-2 WHEA record. The Northeastern Huskies closed out 2016 with back-to-back overtime losses to Vermont at the beginning of December. One of the NU Huskies two ties against WHEA opponents was against Vermont, making them 0-2-1 against the Catamounts, the other came against No. 6/7 Boston College.
This will be the first time the Husky foes will battle each other this season. The two will play a home-and-home series later this month.
UConn was 0-3 against Northeastern last year. The last time out, UConn led NU 3-2 after the first period, but could not hang on to that lead and ultimately fell to the Northeastern 7-3 at home on January 23, 2016.
