STORRS, Conn. (January 7, 2006) - The University of Connecticut women's ice hockey team fell to No. 6 Mercyhurst, 4-0, on Saturday afternoon in the Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum. With the loss, the Huskies are now 7-13-0 overall while Mercyhurst is 12-6-1 on the season.
Mercyhurst got things started offensively just 3:53 into the first period, when Stefanie Bourbeau took a pass from Ashley Pendleton to give the Lakers the 1-0 advantage. The goal came after Natalie Payne was sent the box on a body checking penalty, cutting the number of Mercyhurst skaters on the ice to four. Bourbeau led the Lakers on the day, dishing out two assists for three points on the game. Lesley McArthur had Mercyhurst's final two goals of the game for a two-point effort.
The Lakers out-shot the Huskies, 32-20, for the game. Both teams were unable to convert power play opportunities, as Mercyhurst went 0-for-2 with the extra skater and UConn was 0-for-5 with the offensive advantage.
Senior Kaitlyn Shain (Calgary, Alberta) had 28 saves on the day while taking the loss for the Huskies. Courtney Drennen had 20 saves between the pipes for the Lakers.
UConn is next in action on Sunday, Jan. 8 when it hosts Niagara in the Freitas Ice Forum at 2:00 p.m.
