STORRS, Conn. – After posting a .979 save percentage over two outings during the weekend, UConn women’s hockey freshman Annie Belanger has been named Hockey East Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week, the league announced on Monday (Jan. 26). It is the fifth weekly honor for a Husky this season and the first career conference award for Belanger.
Overall for the weekend, Belanger (Sherbrooke, Quebec) made 47 saves on 48 shots in UConn’s split of a home-and-home series against Providence. The freshman stopped all 11 shots she faced in a relief stint on Jan. 24 at PC, then made 36 saves on 37 shots in a 4-1 home win over the Friars on Jan. 25. Her overall statistics for the weekend gave her a 1-0-0 record with a 0.77 GAA and a .979 save percentage in 77:51 minutes.
For the season, Belanger holds a 3-6-2 record with a 2.81 GAA and a .920 save percentage over 12 appearances with 11 starts. She is seventh in Hockey East in GAA and tied with teammate Elaine Chuli (Waterford, Ontario) for third in the league in save percentage. Belanger and Chuli are also tied for 18th nationally in save percentage.
The Huskies return to action on Saturday, Jan. 31 for the annual ‘Skating Strides Against Breast Cancer’ contest against No. 7 Boston University. Puck drop against the Terriers is set for 3 p.m.
