STORRS, Conn. – UConn women’s hockey goalie Elaine Chuli (Waterford, Ontario) has picked up yet another accolade in her outstanding month of January, earning Women’s Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week honors for the second time this month. The conference made the announcement on Monday (Jan. 27), and it is the third weekly honor of the season for Chuli.
The nod for the sophomore stopper came after she made 36 saves in a win over Providence on Jan. 25 before notching 30 more on Jan. 26, overall stopping 66-of-68 shots on the weekend. Chuli allowed just one goal in each contest, and has allowed two or less in eight of nine contests in the month of January. Overall since the calendar turned to 2014, Chuli has posted a 1.46 GAA and .956 save percentage, making 30 or more saves in each start and allowing only 13 total goals.
Chuli was also named Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 30 following a 43-save performance against Union and on Jan. 6 after stopping 33-of-34 shots at Princeton. Overall, it is the seventh weekly conference honor for the Huskies this year.
UConn and Chuli return to action Friday, Jan. 31 when they host Boston University in the annual Skating Strides for Breast Cancer Awareness game at Freitas Ice Forum. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m.
