STORRS, Conn. – The UConn women’s ice hockey team reaps the rewards of a weekend sweep against No. 9 Maine, as senior goaltender Annie Belanger has earned Women’s Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week honors after a 2-0 weekend against the Black Bears at the Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum.
It was announced on Monday morning that Belanger was selected for her second Defensive Player of the Week award this season, following her first honor back in October. She made 51 combined saves against nationally-ranked Maine this past weekend.
In Saturday’s game, Belanger pitched her second shutout win of the season – making 26 saves in UConn’s dominant 4-0 win over the Black Bears. On Friday night, she made 25 saves in a 2-1 overtime win for the Huskies.
Belanger improved her overall record to 7-8-5, while boasting a .929 save percentage and 2.07 goals against average this season between the pipes. She currently ranks first among Hockey East goalies in save percentage and third in goals against average.
Behind Belanger’s effort, the Huskies rank third in the league in scoring defense (2.14 goals per game) and have allowed two or fewer goals in four of the last six games. UConn finishes the month of January with a 4-4-1 record.
With six regular-season games remaining in her UConn career, Belanger currently ranks first in all-time save percentage (.925) in program history. In addition, she is third when it comes to goals against average (2.37).
Another big home weekend approaches for the Huskies, as Northeastern and No. 10 Providence visit the Freitas Ice Forum. Friday against the Huskies is at 7 p.m. and Saturday against the Friars at 3 p.m.
