Huskies Skate to 1-1 Standoff with Northeastern

BOSTON, MA (Jan. 31) -- Sara Mahoney (Lynn, MA) scored her third goal of the season in the early stages of the third period, but UConn could not make it stand up as the University of Connecticut women’s ice hockey team skated to a 1-1 tie with Northeastern on Saturday evening at Matthews Arena in Boston, Mass.

Mahoney was able to stuff in a rebound off of Janelle Armitage’s (Calgary, Alberta) shot from the top of the circle to give the Huskies a 1-0 edge at the third period’s 0:56 mark. Northeastern scored the equalizer in the waning moments of the regulation.

Amy Goodney took a feed from Marie Desrosiers and was able to to sneak the puck past UConn net-minder Shannon Murphy (Mapleville, RI). UConn managed the only shot in overtime but it was turned aside by Northeastern keeper Chandra Gunn.

Murphy went neck and neck with Gunn, as both goalies stopped 18 shots. The Huskies were able to kill off all five of Norhteastern’s power-play opportunities, but were unable to capitalize on any of their six opportunities with the extra skater.

UConn is back in action on Friday, February 6 when they travel to Chestnut Hill, Mass. to take on Boston College at 7:00 p.m.
