No. 8/8 Women's Ice Hockey Sweeps Weekend Series With 4-2 Victory over Boston University

BOSTON, Mass. (February 17, 2008) - Jaclyn Hawkins (Manotick, Ont.) and Dominique Thibault (L'Orignal, Ont.) tallied four points apiece to lead the No. 8/8 University of Connecticut women's ice hockey team past Boston University 4-2 in Hockey East action on Sunday afternoon.

With the win, the Huskies improve to 20-5-5 overall and 11-3-3 in the league standings with just four regular season games left to play.

Today's match-up between the Terriers and Huskies came after an overtime battle on Saturday afternoon, which found UConn clinching the victory with seconds left in the game.

UConn led off today's game with the same aggressive attack as they finished with a day before, as Hawkins found the back of the net at the 7:07 mark in the first period. Her goal came off passes from Thibault and freshman Jennifer Chaisson (Cumberland, Ont.), marking Chaisson's 13th assist of the season.

Hawkins added another goal to her tally, with her 13th of the year, as she flipped the puck past Terrier goaltender Allyse Wilcox less than two minutes after her first score. Thibault recorded her 21st assist of the season on the play.

Boston University answered back late in the first period with their first goal on a power play by Gina Kearns. The Terriers then tied the game at two in the second period with another power play goal by Lauren Cherewyk.

But again, UConn did not quit, as Thibault led the charge with the eventual game-winner at 10:58 in the second period. Thibault's power play goal was assisted by Hawkins and junior Samantha Reid (Innisfil, Ont.). Thibault struck again in the third period, as she fired a shot past Wilcox for her second goal of the game and 20th of the season. Hawkins picked up her team-leading 22nd assist on the year with the pass to Thibault with less than a minute remaining in the game.

UConn goaltender Brittany Wilson (Nepean, Ont.) finished the afternoon with 60 minutes played and 25 stops in goal while posting her 14th win of the season. Wilcox made 20 saves in goal for the Terriers as they fell to 13-14-3 overall.

UConn will return to action on Saturday, Feb.23 as they host Maine for a 1:00 p.m. Hockey East match-up in the Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum.
