STORRS, Conn. – After an outstanding month of February, senior goalie Annie Belanger of the UConn women’s ice hockey team has been selected for her first-career nod as Windjammer Best Western Goaltender of the Month, as announced by Hockey East on Tuesday afternoon.
Belanger, who paved the way for the Huskies (15-13-9) this past weekend in an upset series win over second-seeded Providence, went 5-2-1 in February – including an impressive .958 save percentage and 1.24 goals against average.
UConn entered the month on the edge of missing the Hockey East postseason, but Belanger led the way with her defensive play between the pipes. She earned a pair of shutouts against Vermont and Providence, while averaging 28.5 saves per game.
In the three-game series against the Friars in the Hockey East quarterfinals, Belanger made 83 saves in three starts, with a 3-0 shutout win in the second game on Saturday. In Sunday’s elimination game, she allowed just one goal and made 30 stops.
For the season, Belanger leads all Hockey East goaltenders in save percentage (.936) and goals against average (1.86). She has an 11-10-6 record to this point in the 2017-18 campaign.
Belanger, a native of Sherbrooke, Quebec, is UConn’s all-time leader in save percentage (.928) and is tied for second in goals against average (2.26). She was named WHEA Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 23 and Jan. 29.
