STORRS, Conn. - A total of 15 UConn student-athlete be honored by the UConn Club with its Outstanding Senior Scholar-Athlete Award when the group holds its 59th Annual Awards Dinner on Monday night at Gampel Pavilion.
The honorees are: Ali Adelman (San Diego, Calif.) of softball, Harris Agbor (Mesquite, Texas) of football, Alexandra Aserlind (Miami, Fla.) of women's swimming and diving, Kaitlyn Clarke (Tolland, Conn.) of rowing, Diana Filipek of rowing (Sewell, N.J.), Caitlin Gallagher (Lawrence, Kansas) of women's swimming and diving, Alexandra Garcia (Pointe Claire, Que.) of women's ice hockey, Jordan Kirk (Plano, Texas) of volleyball, Meghan Lally (Westwood, Mass.) of women's lacrosse, Nick Majtenyi (St. Catharines, Ont.) of men's swimming and diving, Brittanie Reinold (Sutton, Mass.) of women's rowing, Sara Trevisani (Duxbury, Mass.) of women's rowing, Amy Vaughn (Somerset, Mass.) of softball, Jennifer Ward (Waterford, Conn.) of softball and Scott Warden (Youngstown, Ohio) of men's tennis.
The following is a profile of each winner:
Alison K. Adelman
Alison Adelman has been a four-year member of the UConn softball team and has been a member of the team's pitching rotation for each season. She has 14 career saves with five this season (as of April 1) and has appeared in 55 games with ten wins. Adelman is a seven-time Dean's List student, a three-time BIG EAST Academic All-Star and a three-time National Fastpitch Coaches Association Scholar-Athlete. She is a member of the Alpha Lambda Delta honor society. A native of San Diego, Calif., Adelman is a marketing major in UConn School of Business.
Harris T. Agbor
Harris Agbor was a four-year performer for the UConn football team at defensive back and on special teams. He made 13 starts during his career, including five in 2011. He appeared in 38 career games and all 13 as a senior. Agbor had 53 career tackles with 26 in 2011. During Agbor's playing career, UConn made three bowl appearances, including the 2011 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl - the Huskies' first-ever BCS appearance. Agbor is a three-time member of the BIG EAST All-Academic team and was a CoSIDA Academic All-District pick in 2010. A native of Mesquite, Texas, Agbor is a finance major in the School of Business.
Alexandra Aserlind excelled for UConn in the backstroke and the mid-distance freestyle as she competed at the BIG EAST Championship in each of her four years. She was a team captain her senior year and served as one of the team's study group leaders. During UConn's 2011 spring break, she and her mother Cathy volunteered to go to Haiti to provide medical assistance to the victims of the sunami. A native of Miami, Fla., Aserlind is a sociology major who plans on attending medical school.
Kaitlyn S. Clarke
Kaitlyn Clarke is a senior captain of the Husky rowing team this year and was a member of the novice eight boat that won the Dad Vail Regatta championship in 2010 and finished second at the BIG EAST Championship. In the fall of 2011, she was a member of the varsity eight that finished third at the Head of the Charles. Clarke is a six-time member of the Dean's List and was the recipient of the prestigious Presidential Scholar Award and New England Scholar Award at UConn. She received the School of Engineering Merit Scholarship and is a member of the UConn chapter of the Biomedical Engineering Society. She is a three-time member of the BIG EAST Academic Honor Roll. A native of Tolland, Conn., Clarke is a biomedical engineering major.
Diana R. Filipek
Diana Filipek has been a four-year member of the rowing team and was the stroke of the varsity eight boat that finished third at the Head of the Charles this past fall. As a freshman, she was the stroke of the novice eight that was third at the Dad Vail Regatta. She is a Dean's List student who is a member of the Alpha Lamda Delta honor society and is a three-time member of the BIG EAST Academic Honor Roll. Filipek is an active member of the community through her involvement in the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and Athlete-In-Action. She also serves as a tutor for the Counseling Program for Intercollegiate Athletes. A native of Sewell, N.J., Filipek is a nursing major.
Caitlin U. Gallagher
Caitlin Gallagher is one of the most accomplished swimmers in the history of the UConn program. She is an All-BIG EAST Conference performer who has consistently earned NCAA "B" cut times. Gallagher swam at the U.S. Senior National Championships in both the long and short course each year during her career. Gallagher holds pool records at a number of different facilities and is the school record holder in the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststroke, the 400-yard IM and the 200-yard and 400-yard medley relays and the 800-yard freestyle relays. She is a member of the Honors Program and is a winner of the Honors Scholarship at UConn. A native of Lawrence, Kansas, Gallagher is a finance major in the School of Business.
Alexandra Garcia has been the mainstay of the UConn women's ice hockey defense the past several seasons as she has a .921 career saves percentage and a 2.26 goals against average. She was a second team All-Hockey East pick in 2011 and an honorable mention selection in 2010. She has earned Dean's List honors from both the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the School of Business. Garcia has been a consistent member of the Hockey East All-Academic Team. Garcia is earning a pair of undergraduate degrees at UConn and earning a minimum of 150 credits to accomplish this. A native of Pointe-Claire, Que., Garcia is earning a degree from the School of Business in management with a focus on entrepreneurship and from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences with a major in mathematics and statistics.
Jordan C. Kirk
Jordan Kirk was an All-BIG EAST second team selection as a senior as she reached the 1,000 career kill milestone in 2011. Kirk has earned Dean's List honors four times at UConn and has also been named to the BIG EAST All-Academic Team. A native of Plano, Texas, Kirk is a finance major in the School of Business.
Megan T. Lally
Megan Lally has been a consistent starter and defensive leader for the UConn women's lacrosse team since her freshman year of 2009. She started 15 of 16 games last year as a senior and was among the teams leaders in ground balls and caused turnovers. This season (as of April 2) she has started all ten games and now has 39 career starts in 52 games played. She is tied for third on the team in ground balls. Lally has been a member of the BIG EAST Conference All-Academic team and has earned a spot on the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Association Academic Honor Roll. Shas recently been accepted to the prestigious nurse practitioner graduate program at Northeastern University. A native of Westwood, Mass., Lally is a biological sciences major.
Nicholas A. Majtenyi
Nicholas was a team captain for men's swimming and diving as a senior and was a top performer in the distance freestyle and butterfly. He joined the team as a walk-on and wound up finishing fifth in the 400-yard and 800-yard freestyle relays as a senior at the BIG EAST Championship. He is a team study group leader and is a Dean's List student at UConn. A native of St. Catharines, Ontario, Majtenyi is a physics major.
Brittanie E. Reinold
Brittanie Reinold is a coxswain on the rowing team and has earned Dean's List honors at UConn and has been a member of the BIG EAST All-Academic Team. She has received the Presidential Scholar Award at UConn. Reinold is a member of the American Society of Landscape Architects and has received numerous academic awards and scholarships at UConn, including: the Horace and Gladys Murphey Scholarship, the State of Massachusetts Scholarship, the Alan S. Farwell Scholarship, the Jennifer B. Riggs Scholarship, the Donald M. Maynard Fund Scholarship and the John Elliott Memorial Scholarship. A native of Sutton, Mass., Reinold is a landscape architecture major.
Sara N. Trevisani
Sara Trevisani has been a four-year member of the UConn rowing team and was the coxswain for the novice eight that finished third at the Dad Vail Regatta in her freshman year. She is a Dean's List student who is a member of the Alpha Lamda Delta honors society and has received the New England Scholar Award at UConn for consecutive semesters with a 3.7 grade point average or higher. Trevisani has also been named to the BIG EAST Academic Honor Roll. She is a participant in the Husky Reach community service program and is a tutor for the Counseling Program for Intercollegiate Athletes. A native of Duxbury, Mass., Trevisani is a physiology and neurobiology major with a minor in business administration.
Amy A. Vaughan
Amy Vaughan played in 150 career games at UConn and has exploded as an offensive powerhouse in her senior has she leads the team in batting with a .373 average as of April 1 to go along with nine home runs and 29 RBI. She helped make national history in a March 13, 2012 game vs. California-Bakersfield as she was one of two Huskies to hit a grand slam home run in the same inning - a feat which had never been accomplished in the history of the NCAA. Vaughn is a Dean's List student who has also been named an All-American Scholar-Athlete by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. She is a three-time member of the BIG EAST All-Academic Team. A native of Somerset, Mass., Vaughan is a dual major in history and American studies.
Jennifer L. Ward
Jennifer Ward is one of the leading performers in UConn softball history on the base paths as she is second in career steals with 44 as of April 1. She has appeared in 172 career games with 70 career hits. Ward is a Dean's List student and has been named an All-American Scholar-Athlete by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. She is a three-time member of the BIG EAST All-Academic Team. A native of Waterford, Conn., Ward is an allied health major in the School of Agriculture and Natural Resources.
Scott M. Warden
Scott Warden has signified a consummate student-athlete during his four years in Storrs. As a senior, Warden was selected captain of the men's tennis squad by his teammates. He has been a member of the BIG EAST All-Academic Team in each of his first three seasons. Warden has served as UConn's No. 1 singles player throughout his senior season while also competing at No. 1 doubles for much of his career. A member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, Warden has been named an ITA Scholar Athlete from 2009-2011. Warden has been a member of the honors program during his four years in the UConn Business School. A native of Youngstown, Ohio, Warden is a finance major in the School of Business.
