STORRS, Conn. -
The University of Connecticut women's ice hockey team has selected the individuals who will serve as team captains for the 2009-10 season. Senior Amy Hollstein (Pembroke, Mass.) will resume her captaincy for the upcoming season and joining her will be classmates Cristin Allen (Pickering, Ont.), Michelle Binning (Oshawa, Ont.) as well as junior Jody Sydor (St. Alberta, Alta.) as announced at the team's end of the year banquet.
Hollstein, who wore a "C" on her shoulder for much of the previous season, matched a career-best 13 goal season effort while adding 15 assists during her junior year. She was third on the team with 28 points and was responsible for three gamewinners during the year.
A consistent presence on the blueline, Allen received a spot on the New England Writers Hockey All-Star team following an arguably a career year with the Huskies. She was selected to the All-Hockey East Second Team after finishing fifth in the NCAA in points per game among defensemen. Allen was fourth on the team with 27 points in 35 games played, including a team-best 22 assists. She was twice named the Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week.
Binning continually came in the clutch for UConn last season, leading the team with seven gamewinners. She was sixth in the nation in power-play goals (10) and tied for seventh in the NCAA in game-winning goals. Binning exceeded her career-best scoring outputs with 17 goals and 13 assists her junior season.
The only captain elected by the team that is not a member of the senior class, Sydor followed her Hockey East Mission All-Rookie Team season with a solid sophomore effort in 2008-09. She doubled her scoring effort with two goals and 18 assists including three assists on gamewinning goals throughout the year.
"All of these student-athletes have made significant contributions to our program in the past and I see a special motivation in their eyes this spring to continue that role," head coach
Heather Linstad said. "I am excited about the leadership they will provide the 2009-10 team and I know they will push each other and their teammates to achieve excellence on and off the ice."
This is the first time in program history that four student-athletes will share the captaincy.
In addition to being named a team captain, Hollstein was also the recipient of the team's MVP award at the end of the year banquet. Also honored with team awards were Jessica Lutz (Rockville, Md.) who was named the Most Improved Player, Brianna Uliasz (Chalfont, Pa.) as the Unsung Hero and Rebecca Hewett (Oak Bluff, Man.) who pulled in Rookie of the Year honors.
