STORRS, Conn. – The UConn women’s ice hockey team announced its 34-game slate for the upcoming 2016-17 regular season. Under four-year head coach, Chris MacKenzie, the Huskies will play a 24-game Hockey East schedule and host 15 contests at the Freitas Ice Forum.
“We will have another challenging schedule ahead of us this season,” MacKenzie said, “Hockey East is always a competitive league and this year will be no different.”
UConn will open its regular season schedule with two games on the road against Union beginning Sept. 30. The Huskies met the Dutchwomen on only one occasion last season, in their home opener on Oct. 3, where the result ended in a 2-2 tie.
The Huskies play their first home game of the season the following weekend when they host non-conference, Quinnipiac on Friday, Oct. 7 at 7 p.m., before they hit the road for a two-game series with Rensselaer (Oct. 14-15).
After hosting Penn State for two (Oct. 21-22), UConn faces its first Hockey East opponent as it takes on Boston College in a home-and-home series, beginning at home on Friday, Oct. 28 and concluding Saturday, Oct. 29 in Boston.
The Huskies kick off November with three straight away games, starting with Merrimack on Saturday, Nov. 5, followed by UNH on Sunday, Nov. 6 and then a Tuesday match-up at Brown on Nov. 8. UConn will return home to Freitas on Friday, Nov. 18 for the team’s only home game in November, before hitting the road again for a single contest with Vermont (Nov. 20).
The 13th annual Nutmeg Classic will be held at Quinnipiac the last weekend of November. The Huskies will meet Yale in the first round on Friday, Nov. 25. The consolation and championship games will take place Saturday, Nov. 26.
UConn is set to play two games in the month of December, a home-and-home series with Boston University, before a month-long break in action. The Huskies will host the Terriers first on Friday, Dec. 2 before finishing off the series in Boston on Saturday, Dec. 3.
Coming back from the month-long hiatus, the Huskies kick off 2017 with a Monday night showdown with Northeastern on Jan. 2, followed by an action-packed week of five games in eight days.
After a home-and-home series with Merrimack (Jan. 7-8), Connecticut will host BU for a Tuesday meeting on Jan. 10 before a weekend home-and-home series with Providence (Jan. 13-14). The Huskies will play their final home-and-home of the regular season against the rival Huskies of Northeastern on Friday, Jan. 21 at Freitas and Saturday, Jan. 21 in Boston.
The Huskies will finish out January with back-to-back home games against Vermont on Friday, Jan. 27 and Saturday, Jan. 28.
Up next, UConn will hit the road at the start of February when it takes on three different opponents in four consecutive away games, including Boston College (Feb. 4), Providence (Feb. 5) and Maine (Feb. 10-11).
The curtain will close on the 2016-17 regular season when Connecticut hosts New Hampshire for two games at Freitas on Friday, Feb. 17 and Saturday, Feb. 18. The 2016-17 WHEA quarterfinals are set for Feb. 24-26.
