STORRS, Conn. – The University of Connecticut women’s ice hockey team was pegged for fifth in the eight-team Hockey East in the league’s preseason poll that was released Tuesday afternoon.  For the second straight season, Boston University was chosen by the conference’s coaches as the preseason favorite, garnering 55 points and six first place votes.

Boston College earned a pair of second place votes and 51 overall points to claim the second spot in the rankings.  Northeastern (42) and Providence (39) took the third and fourth spots, respectively.  Following UConn (30) is Vermont (24), New Hampshire (21), and Maine (18).

“We’re more top heavy than we are bottom heavy, now,” said Connecticut head coach Heather Linstad on the competitive nature of Hockey East.  “Certainly, we proved that last year with our record, as a league, against non-conference opponents.  I think that that’s certainly showing in the way our league is.  Obviously, having Boston College and BU get to the Frozen Four was huge for our league.  I’m excited about where the league is going.”

UConn returns six of its tops seven scorers from a year ago.  Sophomore Taylor Gross (Colorado Springs, Colo.) led the squad with 23 points on a team-best 12 goals and 11 assists as a rookie.  Senior defender Sami Evelyn (Nepean, Ont.), a Second Team All-Star selection last season, totaled 19 points, including a team-high 19 assists for the Huskies in 2010-’11.  In net, senior Alexandra Garcia (Pointe-Claire, Que.) earned runner-up honors for player of the year after sporting a 2.60 goals against average and providing 903 saves for a .921 save percentage.

The Huskies host McGill (Quebec) this Friday night in their only preseason tune-up before the regular season kicks off.  Face-off for the exhibition against the Martlets will be at 7:00 pm in the Freitas Ice Forum.  Regular season play gets underway the following weekend as UConn welcomes RPI on September 30 and October 1.
