WAKEFIELD, Mass. – The University of Connecticut women’s ice hockey team was selected to finish fourth in the 2016-17 Hockey East Preseason Coaches’ Poll as announced by the conference Tuesday.
The Huskies, who received 56 points in this year’s poll, moved up one spot from last year, when they were predicted to finish fifth with 32 points.
At the helm of fourth-year head coach Chris MacKenzie, the UConn program has continually improved its position in the preseason conference poll, climbing at least one spot in every year of his tenure.
UConn concluded its 2015-16 season in its second straight appearance in the Hockey East semifinals, where the Huskies were knocked out by reigning conference champs and preseason favorite, Boston College, who advanced to the national championship game last season.
MacKenzie returns 15 players from last year’s roster that helped the team to its first overall winning record since the 2009-2010 season. UConn also welcomes seven newcomers to the squad this season.
The Huskies kick off their 2016-17 regular season on the road with a pair of games against Union, beginning Sept. 30. UConn will play its first home game the following weekend when it hosts Quinnipiac on Friday, Oct. 7 at 7 p.m. at the Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum in Storrs.
