HOCKEY EAST ANNOUNCEMENT
STORRS, Conn. – The UConn women’s ice hockey team has been picked to finish in sixth place according to the Hockey East Preseason Poll, which was released on Tuesday morning at the conference’s media day.
Head coaches throughout the league voted in the poll, as reigning champion Boston College was chosen to repeat in 2017-18. The Eagles earned seven first-place votes and 63 points overall, with Northeastern shortly behind at 56 points.
The Huskies, who finished with an overall record of 14-18-4 last season under head coach Chris MacKenzie, are coming off a seventh-place finish in Hockey East. UConn was chosen to finish fourth in the 2016-17 preseason poll.
Tuesday’s poll has UConn with 27 points – in-between Vermont (33) in fifth and New Hampshire (26) in seventh. The Huskies need to finish in the top eight to qualify for the Hockey East Tournament.
Boston University (51) and Providence (41) round-out the top four places, with Merrimack (16) and Maine (11) bringing up the rear. UConn won’t have to wait long to prove itself in the league, as its home-opener is against Vermont on Saturday, Oct. 7.
MacKenzie’s team lost only three seniors a year ago, returning eight this season – including top goal scorers Leah Lum and Theresa Knutson – as well as goalie Annie Belanger. Six freshmen also join the team for 2017-18.
The Huskies open the season this weekend at St. Cloud State. Puck drop is on Friday at 7 p.m. (ET) and on Saturday at 4 p.m. (ET).
