STORRS, Conn. - In it second weekend of regular season action, the University of Connecticut women's ice hockey team is set to take on a pair of nationally-ranked opponents on the road. The Huskies will face No. 5 St. Lawrence and No. 7 Clarkson after starting the season with a 0-1-1 record and a 0-1-1-0 mark in Hockey East play.
Junior Brittany Murphy (Tewksbury, Mass.) and senior Tiffany Good (Hellertown, Pa.) were each responsible for a UConn goal over the weekend with Murphy hitting the back of the net against the Wildcats and Good scoring her first career goal against Northeastern. Sophomore Alexandra Garcia (Pointe-Claire, Que.) started in both games for the Huskies and matched her career-high save mark of 27 saves against New Hampshire.
Friday's game at St. Lawrence is the first regular season contest for the Saints after recording a 2-1 victory over McGill in exhibition play. No. 5 St. Lawrence lost a significant number of contributors to the team's successful 2008-09 campaign although they will be led once again by senior Brittony Chartier between the pipes. Chartier concluded the year with a 2.04 goals-against average (GAA) and a .925 save percentage.
Last season, the Huskies battled to a 4-4 tie at Mark Edward Freitas against the Saints, who were nationally ranked at the time.
This is the first meeting between No. 7 Clarkson and UConn in women's ice hockey. The Golden Knights jumped into the top-10 after a win and a tie against then-No. 6 Boston College to open the season. Clarkson defeated the Eagles 6-1 in its season-opener before ending the weekend with a 1-1 draw against Boston College. The Huskies will face a pair of ECAC weekly honorees in reigning ECAC Player of the Week Melissa Waldie and ECAC Goaltender of the Week, Lauren Dahm.
Waldie contributed a pair of goals to the Golden Knight's offensive efforts while Dahm finished the weekend with a 0.96 GAA and a .947 save percentage.
UConn is 11-22-1 in games against first time opponents.
