Salazer-Reid Scores Two in 4-2 Exhibition Win Over Bluewater

STORRS, Conn. (Oct. 9) - The University of Connecticut women's ice hockey team defeated the Bluewater (Ont.) Junior Hawks by a score of 4-2 Saturday afternoon at the Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum in Storrs, Conn. The game was the Huskies' exhibition tune-up before opening their 2004-05 season.

The game remained scoreless through the first period. UConn outshot the Hawks 6-4, but could not get anything past Bluewater netminder Krystin Gander. Scoring opened up just 2:03 into the second period though as senior forward Caitlin Salazer-Reid (London, Ontario) netted a power play goal from the point to give Connecticut a 1-0 lead. Bluewater evened up the game at 1-1 just minutes later with a power play goal of their own. The Hawk's Jenna McCall scored with assists from Janelle Van Nynatten and Courtney Chadwick.

The Huskies answered back just 20 seconds later as Salazer-Reid scored her second goal of the day to give UConn the lead for good. Fellow senior Jacquelyn McGuire (Glenview, Ill.) collected an assist on the goal, setting up the puck for Salazer-Reid to tap in right in front of the net. The Huskies took a 3-1 lead into the second intermission when freshman Jaclyn Hawkins (Manotick, Ontario) scored the third UConn goal of the period.

Katrina Protopapas of the Hawks scored 5:19 into the third stanza to bring her team within one goal, but goaltender Shannon Murphy (Mapleville, R.I.) and the UConn defense were able to stop all other Bluewater scoring chances. UConn clinched the win when Shannon Connolly (Baldwinville, N.Y.) stuffed the puck into the goal off a scramble in front of the net at 17:09 to move the score to 4-2 where it would remain final.

UConn outshot Bluewater 30-12, with the Huskies going 1-for-9 on the power play while the Hawks were 1-for-11.
