HOCKEY EAST RELEASE
STORRS, Conn. – Senior goaltender Annie Belanger was named Women’s Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week on Monday for the first time in her career, following her 45-save outing against No. 3 Boston College on Friday.
The UConn women’s ice hockey team (3-3-1, 0-2-1 WHEA) earned a 2-2 draw against the Eagles at the Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum, going toe-to-toe with one of the premiere teams in the country behind Belanger’s effort.
For the Huskies, it is the second straight week that a player has earned Hockey East recognition – with sophomore Briana Colangelo selected as WHEA Player of the Week on Oct. 16.
Belanger, a native of Sherbrooke, Quebec, stopped 45 shots by Boston College – nearly matching her career-high 48 saves against Northeastern as a freshman in 2014. With goals from seniors Theresa Knutson and Leah Lum, the Huskies earned a point against the nationally-ranked Eagles.
Over the weekend, Belanger played all 125 minutes (five minutes in overtime against BC) for the Huskies between the pipes. She made 81 total saves against the pair of league opponents, including 36 against Boston University on Sunday.
In five appearances this season, Belanger is averaging 29 saves per game and has a 2-2-1 record in those starts. Her save percentage of .929 is fourth-best in Hockey East among all goaltenders.
Belanger has made 62 appearances, including 57 starts, in her career at UConn. Her career save percentage of .924 ranks first in program history, while her 2.45 goals against average is good for fourth on the all-time list.
UConn is off this coming weekend, but is back in home action on Nov. 3-4 to play Rensselaer at the Freitas Ice Forum. Puck drop on Friday, Nov. 3 is at 7 p.m. (ET) and on Saturday, Nov. 4 at 3 p.m. (ET).
