STORRS, CT (Nov. 22) The University of Connecticut womens ice hockey team slipped past Niagara, 3-2 on Friday evening at the UConn Ice Arena. The Huskies improve to 5-6 overall as the Purple Eagles fall to 7-4.
The Huskies put two goals on the board in the first, both being unassisted tallies. Defenseman Laura Stosky (Edmonton, Alberta) broke through at the 16:12 mark when she retrieved her own rebound and put it past Jennifer Mascaro for the ice-breaker. With just 31 seconds on the clock, the Huskies scored their second when Sara Mahoney (Lynn, MA) took the puck up the ice and fired a shot for goal two.
Niagara put their first one on the board in the second when Jenn Goulet took a pass from Christine Brown. Connecticut reclaimed their two-goal lead on Jacquelyn McGuires (Glenview, IL) first game-winning goal of the season. Megan McLeod (Livonia, MI) recorded the assist. The Purple Eagles answered back to bring them within one on a goal from Valerie Hall.
Niagaras Jennifer Mascaro recorded 14 saves and let in three goals before being replaced by Breanne Doyle, who mad 17 saves. Kaitlyn Shain (Calgary, Alberta) started in net for the Huskies, stopping 15 and allowing both Niagara goals. Shannon Murphy (Mapleville, RI) stepped in to stop 10 and finish the game.
UConn returns to action on Tuesday, November 26 when they match up with Harvard at 7 p.m. The Huskies return home on Saturday, November 30 when they play host to Cornell at 2 p.m.
