UConn Commits Six to Early Signing Class

STORRS, Conn. - Head Coach Chris MacKenzie and the UConn women's ice hockey team announced six future student-athletes signed national letters of intent Monday during the early signing period. The Huskies will welcome four forwards, a defenseman and a goaltender for the 2016-17 season.

"Our Assistant Coaches, Casey Handrahan and Jaclyn Hawkins have recruited a class that will add a combination of skill, grit and solid goaltending to our team.  We are excited to add this class to our returning players as we continue to build our program," said Mackenzie on the class. 

The Huskies will welcome three players from Canada, one from New York, another from New Hampshire and one a local of Vernon, Conn. Briana Colangelo, Catherine Crawley, Erica D'Errico, Morgan Fisher, Emily Reid and Leona Sim make up the early signing class.  See below for the full bios on each of the future Huskies.

Briana Colangelo | Whitby, Ont. | Whitby Jr. Wolves | 5'7 | F | L

Before UConn: Currently plays for the Whitby Jr. Wolves...Helped the Wolves earn OWHA Provincial Bronze IAA and PWHL Final Four Silver Medalists last season...was a member of team Ontario Red U18 Championship team in 2015...in 2013, was a part of the Whitby Wolves Midget AA that earned OWHA Provincial Bronze MAA and LLFHL Divisional Champions... in 2012-13, helped lead the Whitby Bantam AA team to the OWHA Provincial Gold title...played soccer from 2005-2011.


 

 

Personal: Briana Sandra Colangelo...born May of 1998...daughter of Toni and Lou Colangelo...has three siblings, Bailey (16), Brooke (14) and Britney (12)...plans to major in nutritional science at UConn.

Why she chose UConn - "The school offers a variety of different programs to choose from. Everything there was exciting and there is awesome support for all sports teams! I am very excited to be attending UConn and I cannot wait for what is to come!"

MacKenzie on Colangelo: "Briana is a skilled forward who can find her teammates.  She has been very consistent from an offensive production standpoint and has developed into a solid two way player for her team this season. We expect that to continue during her college career"

Catherine Crawley | Washingtonville, N.Y. | Mid Fairfield Stars/Westminster | 5'2 | F | L

Before UConn: Currently plays for the Mid Fairfield U19 Stars and for Westminster Prep School...with the Mid Fairfield Stars, has been to USA hockey nationals the past six years, earning one national championship and one second place finish...attended USA Hockey National Development Camp in 2012-14...helped Westminster to a Division A New England girls prep hockey championship in 2013-14 season as a sophomore...named to second team All-New England last year in 2014-15...voted team MVP in 2014-15...Led Westminster in scoring all three season with 41 goals and 48 assists in 72 games...served as a tri-varsity captain for ice hockey, field hockey and softball.

Personal: Catherine Jenna Crawley...born January of 1997...daughter of William and Jeanne Crawley...has one older brother, Connor...plans to major in nutritional sciences at UConn.

Why she chose UConn - "UConn has rigorous athletic and academic expectations that will further my overall potential as a person. Its campus felt like home and the students were ones I want to surround myself with for the next four years. I am excited and honored to be a part of the UConn family." 

MacKenzie on Crawley: "Catherine is a skilled forward who has produced offensively everywhere she's played.  She has a knack of scoring big goals for her team."

Erica D'Errico | Concord, N.H. | Northern Cyclones | 5'5 | F | R

Before UConn: Serves as a captain this year on the Northern Cyclones...recorded 14 goals, 16 assists in 24 games, for a total 30 points so far this season... finished last season with 46 goals and 74 assists for a massive 120 points and served as assistant captain for the Cyclones... was voted the NEWJHL league MVP in 2014-15...participated in the USA National Development camp for three years.

Personal: Erica Taylor D'Errico...born in May of 1996...daughter of Linda and Chris D'Errico...has one older brother, Zach...is undecided on a major at UConn.

Why she chose UConn - "I believe this university will provide me with the best academic and athletic experience possible. With hard work, focus, and discipline, I know UConn will help guide me to a successful future."

MacKenzie on D'Errico: "Erica has been an offensive catalyst for her team the past few years.  She combines skill with a competitive streak that we expect to see flourish UConn."

Morgan Fisher | Vernon, Conn. | Mid Fairfield Stars/Williston Northampton | 5'6 | G

Before UConn: Currently plays for both the Mid Fairfield Stars U19 AAA club team and the Williston Northampton School...made the 2015 USA Women's U-18 Select Team...was voted the 2014-15 team MVP...played four years of varsity softball and four years of varsity field hockey...served as captain of the softball team...was voted All-New England goalie in 2013 for field hockey...is an honor roll student.

Personal: Morgan Shirley Fisher...born in June of 1998...daughter of Lisa Fisher...has a twin sister Kelsey...is undecided on a major at UConn.

Why she chose UConn - "UConn has been my dream school since I was a little kid. I wouldn't want to go to college any place else."

MacKenzie on Fisher: "Morgan was born to be a Husky.  She grew up 15 miles away and shares a passion for UConn athletics like the rest of the state of CT.  She is an intense competitor who has always given her team a chance to win.  Morgan and Annie Belanger will provide solid goaltending for us going forward."

Emily Reid | Whitby, Ont. | Whitby Jr. Wolves | 5'8 | D | L

Before UConn:  Currently plays for Whitby Jr. Wolves... Helped the Wolves earn OWHA Provincial Bronze IAA and PWHL Final Four Silver Medalists last season...was a member of team Ontario Blue U18 Championships in 2015 and a was National Bronze Medalist...in 2013-14, was a part of the Whitby Wolves Midget AA that earned OWHA Provincial Bronze MAA and LLFHL Divisional Champions...in 2012-13, helped lead the Whitby Bantam AA team to the OWHA Provincial Gold title...competed with the Oshawa Lady Blue Knights (lacrosse) U15 Elite Provincial Champs team in 2012-13.

Personal: Emily Marie Reid...born in February of 1998...daughter of Milton and Kelly Reid...has one older brother, Adam...looking to major in health sciences at UConn.

Why she chose UConn - "I chose UConn because of the beautiful campus, the amazing school spirit and community feel, the top notch hockey and athletics programs, the welcoming coaching staff and the extensive selection of education options. It truly is the perfect fit for me!" 

MacKenzie on Reid: "Emily is a strong, physical player with a great work ethic. We expect her to compete for ice time with a strong returning D corp."

Leona Sim | North Vancouver | Pacific Steelers | 5'4 | F | R

Before UConn: Currently plays for the Pacific Steelers out of Richmond, B.C. ...played on team British Columbia at the Canada Winter Games and at the National U18 Championships in 2015...attended Team Canada U18 tryouts for both May and August camps in 2015...was on the academic honor roll in 2013, 2014 and 2015.

Personal: Leona Margaret Sim...born in February of 1998...daughter of Paul Sim and Leslie Smith...has one older sister, Rebecca...is currently undecided on a major at UConn.

Why she chose UConn - "Being recognized as the top school for female athletes, I know UConn will allow me to excel both academically and athletically."

MacKenzie on Sim: "She is a fast, skilled playmaking forward who can score goals from a number of different places on the ice. We expect her to contribute from both ends of the ice."
