WAKEFIELD, Mass. -- After a pair of outstanding performances in the 2014 Nutmeg Classic, UConn women’s hockey goaltender Elaine Chuli (Waterford, Ontario) has earned her second WHEA Defensive Player of the Week award this season. The league announced the weekly award on Monday (Dec. 1).
Chuli picked up the weekly honor after stopping 83-of-86 shots during UConn’s two games at the Nutmeg Classic, earning a spot on the All-Tournament Team for her efforts. She kicked off her tournament with a 51-save performance against No. 5 Clarkson in the semifinals on Nov. 28, before saving 32-of-33 shots in a consolation game victory over Yale on Nov. 29.
The Clarkson performance marked Chuli’s second 50-save outing this season and was four shy of her career-high, set on Sept. 26 vs. No. 10 Minnesota Duluth. It was also five saves from the UConn single-game record.
Overall this season, Chuli has made 11 starts and holds a 3-5-3 record with a 2.75 GAA and a .922 save percentage. Her save percentage is good for fourth in Hockey East and her GAA is sixth. It is the second weekly award for Chuli this year, also taking home Defensive Player of the Week following the season-opening Minnesota Duluth series.
Chuli and the Huskies have the month of December off for finals and winter break before returning to the ice on Jan. 3, 2015 at Northeastern.
