NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - The University of Connecticut lacrosse team opened up the 2011 season this afternoon with an 18-11 victory over Iona at Mazzella Field in New Rochelle, N.Y. The Huskies were led by M.E. Lapham who posted five goals on the day and Lauren Kahn who added four for the Huskies.
"We took a little bit to get started today, but during the second half I thought we played really well," head coach Katie Woods said. "We struggled with our defense a bit which is something that we will focus on before next Friday. Lauren Kahn and M.E. Lapham both had great games for us and it was great to get the first win of the season but we still have work to do as the season moves on."
Iona jumped out to a 2-0 lead just four minutes into the first half, but the Huskies responded with three of their own goals in the next three minutes, including two from Lapham. The Huskies and the Gaels traded leads throughout the next 15 minutes, with Iona holding their final lead of the contest at the 9:36 mark of the first half when they held a 5-4 advantage.
Going in to the halftime break the Huskies held an 8-6 lead after Kiersten Tupper posted her first goal of the game with under two minutes left. UConn expanded its lead to 9-6 just over one minute in to the second half with Lapham marking her fourth score of the game.
In the middle of the second half UConn posted five straight goals to extend its lead to 14-7 and posted three straight goals seven minutes later to earn the 18-11 victory. During that span both Tupper and Kahn posted two goals, as they combined for seven of UConn's 18 goals.
UConn held a 40-17 advantage in shots during the contest and forced 14 Iona turnovers, including eight in the second half.
Nine Huskies recorded at least one goal during today's contest, with three players posting three or more tallies.
The Huskies are back in action next Friday (Feb. 25) when they host Binghamton at 3:00 p.m. in their first contest of the season at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex.
