NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - The University of Connecticut women's lacrosse team opened its season with a 13-2 victory against Iona led by six points from junior midfielder Lauren Kahn and four points from senior midfielder Morgan O'Reilly.
UConn scored the first eight goals of the game before Iona broke through with a goal from Casey Palmer with 6:25 left in the first half. The Huskies carried a 9-1 lead into halftime when Kacey Pippit scored with just 0:05 left on the clock.
The UConn offense continued to roll in the second half when they outscored Iona 4-1 on goals from four different Husky players. The Huskies' goalkeepers Shannon Nee and Marya Fratoni split the minutes evenly with 30 each. In the net, Nee allowed one goal and recorded a save, while Fratoni was credited with two saves and one goal allowed.
The Huskies dominated the game, taking 32 shots compared to the Gael's 14. Iona's Maria Ortiz played the entire 60 minute contest allowing 12 goals and recoding 11 saves.
Kahn scored her first goal with 22:19 in the first half, assisted by Katherine Finkleston and tacked on consecutive goals at the 19:27 and 18:35 minute of the first half. She also recorded the first Husky goal of the second half, with an unassisted goal at 22:23. She finished the game with four goals and two assists.
Both teams recorded 24 turnovers, with the Huskies picking up 32 total ground balls, while Iona picked up 19 ground balls in the second half and finished the game with 25.
UConn will be back in action on Wednesday, February 27, when they travel to Chestnut Hill, Mass. to take on Boston College at 4:00 pm.
