DURHAM, N.H. – A five goal run in the first half proved the difference maker as the University of Connecticut lacrosse team defeated UNH, 16-8, on Wednesday afternoon in Durham, N.H. The eight-goal victory is the Huskies largest margin of victory and the first road win of the season as they improve to 3-2 overall.
Junior Caitlin Leary notched the first goal of the contest just 30 seconds in, but it was quickly answered by back-to-back tallies from New Hampshire (2-3) who took a 2-1 lead. The Huskies then pulled into the lead as senior Kelsey Catalano, freshman Sydney Watson and Leary tallied three consecutive goals in a five minute span for a 5-4 edge.
UConn never faltered, holding the lead from Leary’s goal on. Leary finished the tilt with a career-high five goals. Senior Grace Nolan chipped in with a season’s best nine point performance behind five goals and four assists. Nolan has led the team in scoring all five games of 2018.
The Huskies opened the second half with a five-goal run to extend their lead against UNH, 12-7. UConn held the Wildcats off the score board for nearly 16 minutes before Michelle Smith broke the scoring drought with a tally at 13:38.
Leary, Catalano and Nolan each recorded hat tricks in the half, helping the team outscore their opponents 8-2 in the final 30 minutes. Catalano added three goals for the offense, while sophomore Olivia Miles and Watson posted two and one tallies, respectively. Sophomore Madison Cook played a role in the offensive clinic as well, dishing out two helpers.
UConn returns to the Sherman Family Complex this Saturday against No. 17/RV UMass for a weekend matinee. The tilt is slated to begin at 1:00 p.m. The Huskies are 2-0 at home this season.
