STORRS, Conn. – Despite being down 3-0 at the start, the UConn women’s lacrosse team battled back to down Villanova 13-8 Saturday in its first conference game of the season at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex.
The Huskies are now 7-1 overall and start out their Big East slate 1-0, while the Wildcats drop to 2-9 and 0-1 in conference play.
Sophomore Kelsey Catalano (Stony Brook, N.Y.) led the Huskies with four goals, followed by seniors Katherine Finkelston (Leonardtown, Md.) and Alyson Fazio (Methuen, Mass.), sophomore Grace Nolan (Marcellus, N.Y.) and freshman Brooke Jensen (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.) who all had two goals.
In a low scoring first half, the Wildcats put up three unanswered goals to start the game and the Huskies did not get on the board until over 15 minutes had expired on the clock.
Fazio broke the scoring drought 15:53 into the first half followed by two goals from Catalano which tied the game up at 3-3. Villanova scored once before the end of the half to take a 4-3 lead going into halftime.
The Wildcats quickly made it 5-3 just over a minute into the second half, but the Huskies answered with three straight scores to take their first lead of the afternoon.
After Villanova tied the game up 6-6 seven minutes into the second half, UConn went on a tear, scoring six unanswered goals to pull away from Wildcats 12-6. With less than five minutes to play, Villanova put up two more goals and senior Alexa Bonnes (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) tucked in another goal for UConn to end it 13-8.
Senior goaltender Shannon Nee (Lancaster, Pa.) stopped eight shots, six of which came in the second half, and picked up one ground ball and caused one turnover.
The Huskies hit the road for a weekday match-up with No. 5/6 Syracuse Tuesday, March 29 at 6 p.m. in the Carrier Dome.
