DENVER, Colo. – Freshman Grace Beshlian (Wantagh, N.Y.) tied a program record 20 saves against No. 14 Denver on Sunday, April 2 as the Pioneers outlasted the Huskies 16-11 at the Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium.
UConn (3-7, 0-3 Big East) trailed Denver 8-1 with just over five minutes to left to play in the first half. Sophomore Cait Leary (Suffern, N.Y.) scored the Huskies’ only goal of the first 25 minutes, her first goal of the season.
The Huskies scored three goals in the last five minutes of the first half, two off free positions, close the deficit to five-goals, 9-4, heading into halftime.
UConn battled back against Denver in the second half, playing the Pioneers to an even 7-7 score in the second stanza. Despite Denver scoring four unanswered goals after halftime, UConn went on a five-goal tear to put the score at 13-9 with just over 10 minutes to play.
Senior Ally Tilley (Setauket, N.Y.) contributed three points, including one goal and two assists, to kick start UConn’s second-half scoring spree.
Over the last 20 minutes of the game, UConn outscored Denver 7-3, including those five-straight goals, but the Pioneers’ first-half lead kept them ahead at the buzzer 16-11. Denver’s Elizabeth Behrins scored a career-best seven goals for the Pioneers, who are now 8-2 overall and 2-1 in league games.
The Huskies will continue their search for their first Big East win on Wednesday, April 5 when they travel to Vanderbilt.
