PISCATWAY, N.J. - The University of Connecticut lacrosse team picked up an 8-7 win at BIG EAST opponent Rutgers on Friday afternoon. The win lifted the Huskies to 8-1 on the season and 1-1 in league play, while the Scarlet Knights dropped to 8-3 and 0-2. This marked the first time the Huskies have defeated Rutgers since 2005.
UConn held a 6-5 lead at halftime and held on through a low-scoring second half, with two goals per side.
With the game even at 7-7, Lauren Kahn was able to beat the defenders and score the game-winner at 9:05 and give the Huskies an 8-7 win.
Kahn powered the Huskies offense with five points on a hat trick and two assists. She now leads the Huskies with 40 points on team-highs 21 goals and 19 assists. This is her fourth hat trick of the season. Carly Palmucci also tallied a pair of goals on just two shots, while Katherine Finkelston notched two goals.
For RU, Katrina Martinelli led the way with three points on two goals and one helper.
Shannon Nee played the entire game in the cage for Connecticut and posted 14 saves in the win. Lily Kalata made just three saves in the loss for Rutgers.
UConn was able to hold on for the win despite being outshot, 29-13. The Scarlet Knights also collected 23 groundballs to the Huskies nine.
